Wild Things

During the 1960s, New Mexico imported some exotic animals. Nothing dangerous and I believe they were brought here to improve tourism and hunting. We have natural wild things as do most states like, bears, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, wildcats, pronghorn antelope, ringtail cats, Javelin, lynx, bighorn sheep, and many, many more. The imports are: the ORYX,and the IBEX. We are also concerned about the jaguar that keeps creeping into our state from Mexico.

Coming home from a trip to El Paso a couple years ago, we saw an Oryx standing beside the road. He was huge, much larger that I expected, and so still that I thought at first he was a billboard cutout of some sort! It is great to see them thrive in our area. I agree with you about the jaguar concerns but it is probably inevitable, don't you think? When man tinkers with the natural balance in nature, it invites a counter balance.

The Oryx is so dramatic looking with those colors and all. I haven't seen one for real, but a friend of mine took a photo of a field full of them between Deming and Las Cruces. The Jaguar actually scares me, they get very large and powerful.

Oh it would be fun to see an ibex or oryx just standing beside the road. Very cool indeed. Up by us they imported the elk which is doing quite well and we have the occasional moose or two sightings every year.

I never saw the Oryx like Lyn did, wish I had. The pronghorn antelope wanders on to private land to eat. I saw one of these on someone's front lawn last year and like Lyn, I thought it was a statue until it moved. The antelope was also larger up close than I expected, I thought it would be like a deer. Mel...we have Elk crossing signs starting about 25 miles north of us, but no Moose, lol.
